WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2-0 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
Sunday’s action started with Wolverhampton Wanderers travelling to West Bromwich Albion in the Black Country derby. The Baggies came into the game having won just once in their previous eight Premier League games, however that run came to an end with a 2-0 win over their rivals to extend the visitors’ losing streak to five consecutive games. The result becomes Albion’s first home win of the season and sees them climb out of the relegation zone, winger Chris Brunt and striker Peter Odemwingie scoring the goals for Roy Hodgson’s side.
ARSENAL 2 – 1 SUNDERLAND
Arsenal have talisman Robin Van Persie to thank for their 2-1 over Sunderland.
The Dutchman scored his first after 28 seconds before former Gunner Sebastian Larsson curled in a great free kick just past the half-hour mark. However, the Arsenal captain came to the rescue just eight minutes from the end when he whipped a free kick of his own into the net, sending Arsenal into the top half of the table.
NEWCASTLE UNITED 2 – 2 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
The weekend schedule ended when Tottenham were denied a fifth straight win in a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park. Shola Ameobi came off the bench to score a wonderful left foot strike with four minutes left on the clock. Rafael Van Der Vaart opened the scoring for Spurs from the penalty spot after a foul on Emmanuel Adebayor by Steven Taylor. However, Demba Ba equalised when he converted just after the break following great work from Jonas Gutierrez down the left-hand side. Jermaine Defoe then gave the London side the lead once again with a great swivel and shot on the edge of the box to fire low past Tim Krul in the Toon goal. The game opened up with both teams looking to score again, but it was left to Ameobi to end a compelling watch with a deserved point.
